HOUSTON, Texas - The Concordia Texas women's soccer team outlasted the St. Thomas Celts by a score of 3-2 thanks to a game-winner by freshman
Alycia Buenaventura. Fellow forwards
Kaley Kaspar and
Kallie Krenz also found the back of the net to give the Tornados their second win in a row at Houston Sports Park on Sunday.
Jenna Townsley,
Patricia Heckendorn, and
Emma Visser all secured one assist apiece on the day as CTX doubled their opponents in shots on goal at 14-6.
CTX broke into the scoring column midway through the first half when Townsley connected with Kaspar in 24th minute. Keeping pressure on offensively, the Tornados scored again five minutes later when Heckendorn got the ball to Krenz for the 2-0 advantage. The Celts capitalized on a penalty kick late in the half to cut their deficit to 2-1 heading into the intermission.
St. Thomas would score their final goal and tie the match when a corner kick resulted in an own goal by CTX in the 54 minute. With both teams jockeying for the lead, Visser dropped in a beautiful lead pass to Buenaventura who beat the Celts' defender for a goal with 15 minutes remaining. The Tornados would ultimately hold firm for the final minutes to earn the victory.
Before they start ASC play, Concordia Texas will host Huston-Tillotson next Monday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
