ROUND ROCK, Texas – Concordia Texas men's soccer (0-1-0) was downed in their season opener against St. Thomas (1-0-0).
Theo Givens connected with
Marco Casulli on a free-kick, set piece for the Tornados' lone score. ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Joshua Redding posted five saves at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Thursday.
The action was competitive and even throughout much of the first half. Things would take a turn in the Tornados' favor when a St. Thomas player would draw a red card off a nasty foul. Following the card in the 42nd minute, a free kick by Givens would ricochet off of Casulli to give the Tornados the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Down to only 10 players on the field, the Celts would knot the game up early in the second half with a counterattack. They would then take the lead with another goal when a missed Celts' shot hit off the top of the crossbar and was headed in.
With the Tornados pressing to tie the game up late, they would press all their players on the offensive side. Following a quick change of possession, St. Thomas would score one more goal in the final minute for a 3-1 win.
Concordia Texas will now travel for a two-game road trip in Lincoln, NE. They will first play Concordia College (Minn.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. Live video and live stats links are available at athletics.concordia.edu.
