Men's Soccer Takes Down Concordia (Minn.)

Theo Givens registered a hat trick and assist in the win.

LINCOLN, NE - Concordia Texas men's soccer junior Theo Givens had a game to remember as he posted a hat trick and one assist in the Tornados' 4-2 come from behind victory against Concordia (Minn) on Saturday. Christian Barillas, Antonio Rios and Marco Vazquez also tallied assists while Gustavo Hernandez netted his first career goal at Abel Stadium.

CTX did an excellent job controlling the pace early on. Givens served a cross to Vazquez that was saved in the 24th minute, and Givens powered a 25-yarder that was coralled two minutes later.

Following a corner kick in the 36th minute, the Tornados broke into the scoring column when Barillas found Givens on a cross into the box. This would be enough to give the Tornados a 1-0 advantage into intermission.

In the 50th minute, the Cobbers knotted the score at 1-1 when a ricochet off a free kick found the back of the net. CTX almost immediately regained the lead two minutes later when Carlos Huato launched a ball towards the bottom left corner of the net, but it was saved on a diving attempt.

The Cobbers would score another goal in the 60th minute to take the lead, 2-1. Searching for an equalizer, Rios found Givens on the opposite side of the box who then hammered in a left footer into the back of the net with 15 minutes left. Less than five minutes later, Givens fired a 25-yard free kick into the right-bottom of the net to give the CTX the lead. Adding insurance, Vazquez found Hernandez on a counter attack to extend the Tornados' lead.

Pressing to score, the Cobbers turned a cross into a header that was played nicely by Redding. This would be the last threat from either team as CTX would hold on for the 4-2 triumph.

Concordia Texas will stay in Lincoln through the weekend where they will take on Nebraska Wesleyan on Labor Day at 1 PM.
