AUSTIN, Texas - Concordia Texas men's basketball freshman point guard
Jaylon Johnson posted game-highs of 34 points and six assists to go along with six rebounds and the go-ahead layup with one second remaining to help the Tornados secure a 104-102 victory over East Texas Baptist University. Second year guard
Donovan Stafford tacked on 29 points and a game-high eight rebounds inside the CTX Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Both teams were neck and neck throughout the first half until a three-pointer by
Branden Myart sparked an 18-8 run to end the half for a 58-46 Concordia lead.
Stafford connected on a three-pointer with 13:47 remaining in the second half to push the Tornados' advantage to their largest lead at 78-64. CTX maintained a double-digit lead until the Tigers made it an 81-72 game with just over ten minutes remaining. They would continue their push to tie the game at 83-all with 7:43 left.
Stafford knocked down a midrange jumper to reclaim the lead for CTX and spark an 11-0 burst. Another counterpunch by ETBU would bring the game to a 98-98 deadlock. Both teams traded a trio of buckets with only 25 seconds remaining. With the Tornados running down the clock, Johnson raced past the defender and finished a contested layup with only one second left to give CTX the gritty win.
Concordia Texas will now head back on the road to take on Howard Payne this Thursday, Feb. 2. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
