BELTON, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's soccer team clinched a bye in the ASC Tournament next week with a 2-1 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor. Junior
Jose Aguirre notched a goal and an assist at Belton High School Football Stadium on Saturday.
Stats were nearly identical in all phases of the match. The Tornados out-edged the Crusaders 12-11 shots (5-4 on goal), while both teams posted three saves each.Â
Aguirre utilized his blistering speed to force a foul and penalty kick goal in the 14th.
After taking the 1-0 advantage into the intermission, Aguirre found
Antonio Rios in the 52nd to give CTX breathing room. The Crusaders drew a foul in the box and turned it into a penalty goal in the 56th to cut the deficit in half.
Each team had opportunities to score the elusive next goal as action progressed, but both defenses stood tall to result in a win for Concordia.
Concordia Texas will now prep for the ASC Tournament at UMHB where they will take on the winner of Hardin-Simmons vs. Howard Payne. The semifinal will take place next Thursday in Belton.Â
