BOX SCORE BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's soccer team was bested in a physical, 2-1 matchup against Howard Payne University. Gustavo Hernandez scored the lone goal for the Tornados inside of Citizens National Bank Soccer Field on Saturday.

The Tornados were the aggressors offensively for much of the first half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 7-1 (5-1 shots on goal). Although CTX put the pressure on their counterparts for most of the half, a late counterattack resulted in a goal for Howard Payne heading into the intermission.

The Yellowjackets added to their lead in the 64th when a cross pass connected with a bicycle kick goal.

In search of cutting the deficit in a half, a shot by Jesse Garfias sailed just high of the cross bar in the 72nd. Concordia had another opportunity 10 minutes later when a ricocheted ball found Theo Givens who fired the ball high.

The Tornados broke through a minute later when Paul Claffey slipped a pass to Hernandez for the goal. Looking for the equalizer, a shot from just outside the top of the box by Jose Aguirre landed just outside the goal and on top of the net with three minutes remaining. With one final chance to tie the match, a corner kick found Antonio Rios who shot on target but was saved to end the game.

Concordia Texas will now return home to host UT-Dallas next Thursday, October 12th at 8pm.
