AUSTIN, Texas - A strong second half by the visiting Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs lifted them over the Concordia Texas women's basketball team 61-40.
Chelsea Cogborn and
Hayla Flowers tallied a game-high of 10 rebounds each inside the CTX Fieldhouse on Sunday.
Both teams were strong defensively early in the matchup for a 7-7 tie late in the first. The Tornados closed out the quarter with a free throw by
Bailey Andrews and three by Flowers for a 11-7 lead entering the second.
A three by
Mikayla Johnson to open up the second quarter would give CTX their largest lead of the game at 14-7. With a 17-11 Concordia advantage midway through the second, the Bulldogs would take the lead at 23-19 with just over three minutes remaining in the half. Both team would trade baskets, but a jumper by TLU just before the buzzer gave them a 25-23 advantage heading into the half.
Jordan Bravo knocked down a pair of corner threes in the first minute of the third to reclaim the lead at 29-27 for the Tornados. A few minutes later, Andrews swished a three at the top of the arc to give CTX the lead back at 32-31. Texas Lutheran would go on to finish the quarter on a 14-0 run.
A 5-0 burst to open up the final frame via three free throws from
Mackenzie Berger and a wing-three from Flowers cut the deficit down to single digits at 45-38 with just under nine minutes remaining. The Tornados would see plenty of good looks in the final minutes, but a plethora of unlucky bounces would go TLU's way in a 61-40 victory.
