Women's Basketball Outlasts Southwestern in Home Opener

Senior guard Bailey Andrews led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds & seven assists.

AUSTIN,Texas- The Concordia women's basketball team outlasted Southwestern University by a score of 57-53 in the regular season opener. Bailey Andrews reached double figures scoring a total of 16 points and 9 rebounds inside Concordia Fieldhouse.

To start the first quarter, both teams played very competitive on both sides of the floor. Concordia forward Chelsea Cogborn scored the first goal with an amazing pass by Mackenzie Berger. Sophomore forward Hayla Flowers drilled in a 3 pointer to tie the game in the final 40 seconds of quarter one.

The Tornados continued to play aggressively to start the second quarter with back-to-back layups by Andrews to take the lead, 14-11. Coming down to the last three minutes of the second period, Jordan Bravo blasted in a three pointer from deep to extend the lead, 21-15. CTX continued to step on the gas with a sneaky steal by Berger and launched a pass to Bravo for the go-ahead layup. Right before going into halftime Andrews drew a foul and sinks in two free throws to put a Concordia up 28-22.

Senior guard Zakari Perry drove the ball into the paint with a spin around jumper to start the third quarter. Midway through, two straight threes by Mikayla Johnson and Abby Ordonez put the Tornados up 37-27.

To keep CTX in the fight following a Pirates' comeback, Johnson drilled in another huge three pointer in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The matchup became a back-and-forth battle coming down to the last two minutes of the game. To cut into the deficit for Concordia, Bravo sunk in a three pointer to bring the score 46-48.

A turnover error by the Pirates gave the Tornados the ball with Bravo banking in another clutch three pointer for CTX to take the lead, 51-50. In the final 20 seconds of the game a huge three by Andrews would clinch the matchup for Concordia in a hard-fought battle to come out victorious in the matchup..

The Concordia Texas women's basketball team will be back at home to host Texas Lutheran University on November 12 at 1 PM.
