Baseball Earns Series Sweep Over UMHB

Tornados swept the Crusaders for the first time since 2016.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas baseball team earned their first series sweep over UMHB since 2016 as they defeated the Crusaders in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Tornados walked off in game one and earned their first shutout of the season in game two at Gardner-Boggs Field.

GAME ONE: W, 4-3 (Eight Innings)

Dakota Palmer was excellent on the mound as he allowed no runs and only let five runners on base in 4.1 innings.

The Crusaders had one runner on second base in the first inning. After a base hit, Landon Hyle threw out the runner from right field to keep the score 0-0.

Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings, until the Tornados converted a suicide squeeze by Aaron Gomez to score Shawn Huber in the bottom of the fourth. With no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Chris Morrow hit a sac fly to right field to bring home Matthew Armes for a 2-0 advantage. Later in the inning, an error on a double play scored Brandon Goynes to make it 3-0.

Down to their last three outs, UMHB showed life as they tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Showing resiliency, the Tornados walked off the series victory with a Kalen Clark walk-off RBI to score Zach Seigrist.

GAME TWO: W, 6-0 (Seven Innings)

David Matthews was the engine to the shutout in game two. The left-handed junior tossed a two-hitter and struck out six batters in 6.0 innings.

The Tornados struck first when a Clark sacrifice fly scored Goynes in the bottom of the first. They then loaded the bases in the bottom of the second as Seigrist, Goynes and Armes raced acrossed the plate for a 4-0 lead.

CTX added insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning when Seigrist laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the pinch runner Gomez and Armes connected on a RBI-single to score EJ Sanchez for a 6-0 lead entering the final inning. This would prove to be the final score as Concordia recorded three more outs to end the game.
