Softball Downed in Offensive Shootout Against Howard Payne

The Tornados exploded for six runs in the second inning.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas softball team was downed in an offensive shootout by a score of 12-7 against Howard Payne University. The Tornados exploded for six runs in the second inning inside Tornado Softball Field on Friday.

Howard Payne capitalized on an error to take an 1-0 lead in the first. The Tornados evened the score when Grace Coleman stole third and raced home following a throwing error. They then went up 3-1 in the frame after Emily Moses lifted a two-RBI single to right center and scored Cristina Ayala and Megan Hooper.

The lead was then extended to 5-1 after a sacrifice fly by Ellie Congalton to score Moses and Kylie Denaro reaching home on another error. Capping off a six-run inning, Mindy Matthews raced home after the Yellowjackets' fourth error of the inning for a 6-1 lead.

Howard Payne knotted the game up at 6-all by scoring five runs in the fourth, but CTX answered in the bottom of the fifth when Coleman laced a single to centerfield to score Zalexis Perez from second. The Yellowjackets once again responded with the final six runs in the top of the sixth for the win.

Concordia Texas will now shift their focus for a Senior Day doubleheader rematch against Howard Payne with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
