Women's Basketball Outlasts the Ozarks in Overtime

Freshman Sophia Read Neared a triple double in the conference victory.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas women's basketball team ended their four-game losing streak with a 72-63 victory over the University of the Ozarks. Freshman guard Sophia Read (18 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds) neared a triple-double, while fifth-year forward Chelsea Cogborn tallied 12 points and 12 assists inside the Concordia Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Tornados were stifling through the first 20 minutes of the game as they produced their best defensive scoring half of the season by holding the Eagles (25.9% shooting in the first half) to 19 points. The Ozarks scored the first bucket of the game with a three-pointer, but it was all Concordia the rest of the quarter as a floater by Haven Haymes capped off a 15-2 run entering the second.

The Eagles countered in the second with a 14-5 burst to cut the deficit to one point with just under three minutes left in the half, but the the Torandos would carry a 24-19 advantage into the break by allowing no more points for the rest of the quarter.

The Ozarks clawed away at Concordia's lead and eventually led 33-30, before Jordan Bravo found Daysha Tijerina for a three to tie the game with five minutes left in the third. With both teams jockeying for position, Concordia led 39-38 entering the final frame.

Neither team saw their lead reach more than three points in the fourth, and the Ozarks would score the final three points of the quarter to force overtime. With the Tornados leading by one with 1:24 remaining, Read corralled the offensive rebound and assisted Abby Parra for a wing three-pointer. This would help CTX put the game away as Read knocked down five free throw in the final minute of action.

Concordia Texas will now hit the road for Abilene where they will take on McMurry University next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
