AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas women's basketball team opened up the 2024-25 season with a 79-64 win over Lewis & Clark College. Grad transfer
Destiny Mathews was spectacular in her debut as a Tornado, posting 37 points and 17 rebounds to lead the charge for CTX.
Mathews' 37 points were the most by a Tornados since
Tyler Compton against Hardin-Simmons on February 22, 2014. Her 17 rebounds were the most since Ally Terry on January 23, 2014 against Sul Ross State.
Sam Ising also had a big game as her seven blocks were the second most by a Tornado in a single game in program history.
The Tornados came out on fire with a 9-2 run to open up the game. They would use that momentum to carry a 16-12 lead into the second quarter. A three by
Kayla Stainthorp with 9:13 left in the second put the Tornados back up by 7, but a 16-5 run by the Pioneers would give them a four-point edge. CTX responded with a run to close the quarter as they entered the break up 35-32.Â
Concordia would then push their lead to double-digits when
Daysha Tijerina knocked down a three-pointer midway through the third. Lewis & Clark reduced the deficit down to one, but another burst by the Tornados to end the quarter gave them 56-47 lead heading into the fourth. The Tornados' lead would balloon up to as much as 17-points early in the final frame as they would go on to claim the victory. Â
