BELTON, Texas - The Concordia Texas baseball team fell by a score of 10-5 at Mary Hardin-Baylor University. Efren Sanchez Jr. recorded a game-high three hits at Red Murff Field in the conference opener on Friday.
The Tornados loaded the bases in the second and an Sanchez Jr. base hit got them on the scoreboard. Julian Swift then capitalized on a bases-loaded, full count pitch with a two-RBI single for a 3-0 lead. The Crusaders answered with five runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-3 lead.
CTX loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, but UMHB mustered up two outs to maintain the two-run lead. Threatening to extend their lead with no outs and the bases loaded, the Crusaders immediately found themselves with two outs following a lineout double play by Chris Morrow. The Tornados then held the opponents at bay with a strikeout by Otto Franz to send it into the fifth frame.
UMHB added a total of four runs to extended their lead going into the seventh. Concordia cut into the deficit and made it a 9-5 game with runs scored by Colby Christian (Sanchez Jr. RBI) & Brandon Goynes in the top of the eighth. The Crusaders added one more insurance run in the bottom of the inning to claim the game one victory.
Concordia Texas will now take on UMHB in a doubleheader to complete the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12pm.
