Baseball Claims Series at McMurry

Chris Morrow homered in game two of the doubleheader.

ABILENE, Texas - The Concordia Texas baseball team secured the the series against McMurry University with a pair of extra-inning victories. Chris Morrow went yard in game two at Walt Driggers Field on Friday.

GAME ONE: W, 5-3 (9 Innings) *Scheduled for seven innings*

The Tornados loaded the bases in the opening inning and scored a run thanks to a walk for Efren Sanchez Jr. Sam Ortiz pushed the lead to 2-0 in the top of the third when Samuel Ortiz ripped a two-out single to centerfield to score Sanchez Jr.

The War Hawks cut the lead in half with a homerun in the fourth, and they then tied the game with another run in the fifth as the game was tied headed to extra innings. 

Headed into the ninth, Julian Swift led off with a walk. He was then brought home for the go-ahead score when Chris Morrow doubled to right field. Concordia also added a pair of insurance runs with RBIs by Brayden Pick & Sanchez Jr. that scored Morrow & Brandon Goynes. McMurry would tally one run in the bottom half of the ninth, but CTX would ultimately claim the victory.

GAME TWO: W, 14-13 (11 Innings)

CTX opened up the game with a two-RBI single by Colby Christian that scored Swift & Aaron Gomez. They then went up 4-0 in the first when Morrow & Christian scored a pair of unearned runs to end the top half of inning. McMurry also came out on fire offensively as they posted seven runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Concordia made it a 7-6 game in the top of the second when Zach Seigrist & Swift scored on a pair of RBI groundouts by Gomez & Morrow. The War Hawks scored one run in the bottom of the second to go back up by two runs, but a sacrifice fly by Mason DuBois scored Pick in the top of of the third.

CTX then took a 9-8 lead when Swift put the ball in play and an error by McMurry allowed Sanchez Jr. & Ortiz to score. After recording their first no-run inning defensively, Morrow powered a solo homer to right field for a 10-8 lead in the fourth. 

The War Hawks tied the game at 10-all in the bottom of the fourth, and reclaimed the lead with another run in the fifth. Concordia tied the game at 11-11 in the top of the seventh when Seigrist connected on a RBI single to score Ortiz.

After scoreless ninth & tenth innings, McMurry threatened to score with two runners in scoring position and no outs. Concordia would stiffen up on defense and force another frame of action. 

CTX went back on top in the 11th when Sanchez Jr. laid down a bunt that resulted in Christian scoring. Later in the inning, DuBois & Seigrist tallied RBIs to score Pick & Sanchez Jr. for a 14-11 lead. McMurry scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit to one, but Ralph Wallace III struck out the final two batters to secure the victory.

Concordia Texas will now return home to host Howard Payne for the final home series of the regular season starting next Friday, April 26. First pitch is set for 4pm.
