MARSHALL, Texas - In the second round of the NCAA Regional, the Concordia Texas baseball team were bested in a pair of matchups against ETBU & Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Tornados fell 7-3 against the Tigers & 6-5 against the Staggs at Woods Field on Saturday.
vs. ETBU, L 7-3
The Tornados got on the scoreboard first when Chris Morrow slapped a RBI-single down the right field line to score Julian Swift in the bottom of the first. The Tigers evened the score with a solo homerun in the top of the second. They then took a 4-1 lead with three more runs in the inning.Â
The Tornados cut into the deficit at 4-2 in the bottom of the frame with a Swift RBI-single to score Matthew Armes. After scoreless frames in the third and fourth, the Tigers made it a 6-2 game with one run each in the fifth & sixth.
The Tigers then notched their fourth solo homer of the game to up their advantage to 7-2 in the eighth. Threatening to add another run with two outs, an ETBU batter slammed the ball deep to left field but Brandon Goynes made a spectacular grab to rob the homerun.Â
In search of a rally, Swift got it started in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI-single to score Goynes from second. This would be the final run of the game as the Tigers would hold on for the victory.Â
vs. Claremont MS, L 6-5
The Stags notched a three runs in the top of the fourth, and another two in the sixth.Â
The Tornados got on the scoreboard in the seventh when catcher Efren Sanchez Jr. blasted a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Brayden Pick &Â Goynes. They then made it a 5-3 game when Seigrist rounded Sanchez Jr. home with a RBI-double.Â
Later in the frame, Concordia loaded the bases. Samuel Ortiz then was walked, and Seigrist tied the game at 5-all with a score on a wild pitch. Claremont juiced the bases with only one out in the top of the eighth, and reclaimed the lead at 6-5. This would be the final run of the game as the Staggs would survive in the elimination game.
