ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's soccer team opened up the regular season with a hard fought draw against UMHB. Junior transfer Devin Hammel scored the lone goal for the Tornados inside the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Friday.
It was an even match throughout the entirety of the night as both teams went deep into their bench in the humid night. As a result, the score was knotted at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Junior goalkeeper Leo Reyes was surgical in his debut as he corralled five saves while patrolling the back line for CTX.Â
CTX almost scored their first goal in the 65th when Reyes punted the ball to a streaking Theo Givens on a counter attack. Givens would send a shot but the Crusaders' keeper would just get a fingertip on the ball for a save.
The Tornados would finally break through in the 81st when Gustavo Hernandez lobbed a pass to the opposite side of the box where Hammel headed it in. UMHB would muster up a goal just a few minutes later as the game would end in a tie.
Concordia Texas will now have a week off before heading to Newport News, Virginia. They will take on Christopher Newport on Friday, September at 7pm.
