LONGVIEW, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against LeTourneau University in the conference opener. Alejandro Rojas netted an 76th-minute equalizer at the LETU Soccer Field on Friday.
The Tornados would see a good scoring chance in the 14th when a shot by Emond Elone would go wide right of the goal post. LeTourneau would threaten with a counter in the 22nd, but the striker's shot would go high. They would have another chance three minutes later that would smack off the right of the goal post for a Tornados' goal kick.
Applying pressure to LeTourneau's back line with just under 15 minutes left, a failed clear out would see Jesse Garfias fire a shot the went high of the net.
LeTourneau capitalized on a free kick in the 36th for a 1-0 score. Concordia almost answered two minutes later when a lob into the box by Joseph Perez found Thomas Saylae with a header that bounced right of the net. Another entry from Perez connected with Saylae right before the halftime buzzer, but LeTourneau's keeper would be in the right spot to keep the score 1-0.
With both teams battling on the field, a counter attack shot attempt by Benjamin Ponce was blocked in the 57th. Another counter attack by CTX saw Christian Serrato get off a clean attempt that missed in the 65th.
CTX would find the equalizer following a LETU goal kick where two tap passes from Andres Munoz & Saylae found Rojas in stride in the 76th. The Tornados would post two corner kicks in the final minute of action, but LeTourneau would hold firm to preserve the tie.
Concordia Texas will next head to Sherman, Texas to take on Austin College this Sunday, September 28th. Kick off is set for 2:30pm.
