ABILENE, Texas - The Concordia Texas softball team shutout the University of St. Thomas by a score of 5-0 in the second round of the SCAC Tournament.
Karlee Mathis was exceptional in the circle, tossing a one-hitter at Edwards Field on Saturday.
The Tornados struck first in the opening inning as Kylie Kirk doubled and came around to score on an RBI single from Lilly Longoria to take an early 1-0 lead.
Concordia broke the game open in the third, plating four runs to create separation. After a leadoff error and a single by Malarie Mican, Kylie Denaro worked a walk to load the bases.
Kirk followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, and Longoria delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a two-RBI double. Molly Olivarez capped the rally with an RBI double of her own to push the lead to 5-0.
That was more than enough support for Mathis as the sophomore tossed a complete-game shutout. Mathis kept the Celts to just one baserunner past second base all game as the Tornados' defense backed up the strong pitching effort.
Concordia Texas remains in the winner's bracket where they will next take on Texas Lutheran on Sunday with a spot in the SCAC Championship series on the line. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
