ABILENE, Texas - The Concordia Texas softball team won their opening game at the SCAC Tournament with a 3-2 comeback win over Centenary College. Junior
Kylie Kirk worked double duty in the circle and at the plate with six strikeouts and the go-ahead two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth at Edwards Field on Saturday.
The Tornados found themselves trailing early after Centenary pushed across runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Concordia struggled to break through offensively through the first four frames but flipped the game in the bottom of the fifth.
After a leadoff walk and a single put runners in motion, Kylie Denaro got Concordia on the board with an RBI single. Moments later, Kirk delivered the biggest swing of the game, driving a two-RBI double to center field to give the Tornados a 3-2 lead they would not give up.
In the circle, Kirk was dominant after entering early, tossing a complete game while allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out six. She settled in after the early innings and kept Centenary off the board down the stretch to seal the victory.
Denaro and Kirk led the offense with key RBIs, while Kamryn Kothman added two hits and Katie Bethke scored twice as part of the game-changing fifth inning.
Concordia Texas remains in the winner's bracket and will turnaround immediately to take on St. Thomas tonight in the next round of the SCAC Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.
