EDINBURG, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's soccer team fell 5-1 to NCAA Division I opponent UTRGV on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Tornados generated the first shot on goal of the match when Shelby Jones tested the UTRGV goalkeeper in the sixth minute. Cecilia Escobar followed with another attempt in the 11th minute before the Vaqueros began to find their rhythm offensively.
UTRGV opened the scoring in the 29th minute and doubled its advantage on a penalty kick at the 37:17 mark. Goalkeeper Kylie Bourquin helped keep CTX within striking distance with four first-half saves as the Tornados entered halftime trailing 2-0.
The Vaqueros extended their lead with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart early in the second half, scoring in the 56th and 58th minutes to make it 4-0.
Concordia continued to battle and broke through in the 74th minute. Emma Payne found the back of the net at the 73:02 mark to put the Tornados on the board with her first goal of the season.
Jazlene Gomez nearly added another goal for CTX in the 82nd minute, placing an attempt on frame that was kept out by a UTRGV team save. The Vaqueros added the final goal of the afternoon in the 84th minute to bring the score to 5-1.
The Tornados finished with five shots, placing three on goal. Escobar led CTX with two attempts, while Payne, Jones and Gomez each recorded a shot on goal. Bourquin collected four saves in the opening half, while Emma Guillen played the final 45 minutes in goal and recorded a save.
Concordia Texas will next head to Waxahachie, Texas to take on Nelson University this Tuesday, September 15th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
