BOX SCORE
AUSTIN, Texas -- Four first half goals propelled East Texas Baptist University to a 5-1 win over the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team Saturday afternoon at Town & Country Optimist Soccer Fields.
Junior #Travis Westfall# scored the lone goal for the Tornados (3-8-2, 1-7-2 ASC) in the 47th minute. Westfall finished a solid build up by CTX, which saw a diagnal ball played by junior #Mathew Waltz# and then cross into the box by sophomore #Drew Kasper#. Westfall then collected Kasper's pass and lifted the ball over ETBU (4-4-2, 4-2-1 ASC) goalkeeper Zanes Barnes and found the back of the net.
ETBU scored its first goal in the 24th minute as Carlos Ortega finished a pass from Richard Andrews.
The Tigers would double their lead as Carlos German scored on a penalty kick after being tripped up in the box by CTX junior goalkeeper #Eric Davis# in the 29th minute.
German netted his second score of the game in the 35th minute after Davis came out to stop a breakaway chance but was unable to clear it out of danger. German needed just one more touch to score on the empty net.
ETBU would net its final score of the first half in the 45th minute as Juan Cabrera scored after Davis punched away a shot attempt. Cabrera was able to run onto the punched ball and also found the back of an empty net as Davis collided with teammate #John Ricks#.
The Tigers would pick up one final goal in the match, this time scoring on substitute freshman goalkeeper #Justin Anaya#. Ortega switched fields to find teammate Carlos Nieto, who slipped the ball into the box and Chris Dier finished past Anaya in the 61st minute.
CTX outshot ETBU, 24-11, and had its chances to score more than the one goal. In the 7th minute, senior forward #Armando Dimeo# hit the crossbar on a bending shot from 25 yards away. The Tornados were turned away later in the half as an ETBU defender came up with a team save after Barnes was unable to secure a shot played from the left side.
Dimeo led the Tornados with five total shots.
Barnes came up with eight saves for the Tigers in a winning effort.
The Tornados have lost seven straight, all of which have come to ASC opponents.
CTX's next chance to return to the win column will come on Tuesday, Oct. 20, as they step out of conference action to play at Austin College. The non-conference tilt is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. in Sherman.
