AUSTIN, Texas -- A 97th minute golden goal in the first overtime by Justin Nesmith propelled the University of Texas-Tyler to a 2-1 win over the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team Saturday afternoon at Town & Country Optimist Soccer Fields.
UT-Tyler (5-6-3, 5-3-3 ASC) scored the winning goal after Edward Anaya played the ball across the box towards the back post and Nesmith finished by shooting across the goal and into the net past CTX (3-10-2, 1-8-2 ASC) freshman goalkeeper #Ubaldo Vazquez#.
The Tornados tied the match up in the 76th minute of play as senior midfielder #Conor Woolbert# scored on a penalty kick.
The Patriots took the early 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute as Tony Guillen scored just inside the near post off an assist from Anaya.
Overall, Vazquez made a career high 16 saves in the match. Senior forward #Armando Dimeo# took a game-high four shots for CTX, including three on goal.
Prior to the match, the Tornados honored their six seniors (Woolbert, Dimeo, #Charles Slater#, #Cameron Wiles#, #Michael Pena#, and #Brian Friend#), who made their final appearance at home.
The Tornados will go on the road for the next match, heading to Clarksville, Ark. to play the University of the Ozarks on Thu., Oct. 29.
