Herman Lifts Tornados Over Yellow Jackets

#Jennifer Herman# scored 18 points to lead the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 69-60 win over visiting LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Herman netted the first eight points for the Tornados (2-2, 2-1 ASC), which kept the game close early in the first half.

LeTourneau (2-4, 2-2 ASC) pushed ahead of CTX after a 5-0 run gave the Yellow Jackets a 25-18 lead.  Concordia would double LeTourneau's scoring output (14-7) over the next six minutes to tie the game (32-32) after freshman guard #Julia Bellquist# scored an easy layup off a fastbreak.

CTX would take the lead (35-32) one minute later as sophomore #Courtney Moore# buried a three-pointer.  The Tornados would extend their lead to seven points (40-33) as freshman guard #Brianna Smith# knocked down an open three-pointer with a few seconds remaining in the half.

The Yellow Jackets opened up the second half with a 15-3 run which propelled them to a 48-43 lead.  Herman's three-pointer at the 16:57 mark was the only points the Tornados could muster in the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second half.  CTX would climb back into the game and regain a lead they would not relinquish as freshman guard #Margaret Milling# knocked down a pair of free throws with 6:30 left in the contest. 

The Tornados would go on to lead by as much as nine points (67-58) as Herman capped off a 13-5 run with a pair of free throws.

LeTourneau scored their final bucket of the contest on a jumper by April McCamey with 1:28 remaining in the game.  CTX would add a pair of free throws from Herman to seal the contest (69-60) with :21 left on the clock.

Smith and Bellquist each recorded 11 points for the Tornados.  Freshman post #Skylar Lott# posted eight points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of acation.

LeTourneau's leading scorer on the season, Alexis Popelar, was limited to 11 points in the game, all of which came in the first 11 minutes of the game.  Colleen Redmond led LeTourneau offensively with 12 points.

Concordia forced 28 Yellow Jackets turnovers in the win and shot 34.4% (21-of-61) from the field, which included 29 attempts from behind the three-point line (9-of-29 for 31%).

The Tornados will continue their current three-game homestand by hosting East Texas Baptist University on Monday, Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
