AUSTIN, TX- Concordia University Texas baseball was swept in American Southwest Conference (ASC) action, by Howard Payne University after losing the final game of the series 5-2, at Nelson Field on Monday afternoon.
The loss drops Concordia to 11-11 overall and 1-5 in ASC action while, the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-10 overall and 4-2 in the ASC.
Howard Payne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after starting the game off with back to back RBI doubles.
Concordia finally got on the board in the bottom of the third after
Justin Beasley led off with a single eventually scoring off an RBI single by
Tom Williams. Senior
Patrick Mercer scored the final run for the Tornados in the third as he advanced on the throw by the Yellow Jackets catcher as Williams stole second.
The Yellow Jackets padded their lead, scoring solo runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth to close out the 5-2 victory.
As a team, Concordia compiled nine hits and three errors in the loss.
Junior Concordia starter,
Ben Whiteley picked up the loss for the Tornados after seven complete innings of work allowing eight hits while retiring four batters to strikeouts. Whiteley is now 2-2 during the 2009 season.
Next action for the Tornados will be this evening as they take on Nebraska Wesleyan University at 7:00pm again at Nelson Field.
