ALPINE, Texas –Concordia University Texas baseball swept the Sul Ross State Lobos in day one of their American Southwest Conference series amassing 29 hits over two games. The Tornados took 12-1 and 9-1 victories on Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field in Alpine.
Concordia improves to 13-13 overall and 3-5 in ASC action while, Sul Ross drops to 2-24 overall and 1-7 in ASC.
The Tornados posted 15 hits in game one of the series as Sul Ross was held to three hits. Concordia put up five runs over the first three innings of play and bagged seven more over the fifth and sixth innings.
In the fifth inning the Tornados scored six runs including a three run homerun by senior
Patrick Mercer.
The lobos lone run came in the Lobo seventh.
Concordia's
Matt Coburn fanned the final Lobo batter to give the Tornados the 12-1 win. Coburn (3-3) threw seven complete innings to take the win while retiring 10 Lobos to strikeouts and allowing one earned run.
In game two Concordia again finished with a large hitting margin, 14-5 in their favor.
Concordia reeled in a pair of scores over the first two innings of play before bagging seven runs over a 3-inning stretch in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
Micah Runnels and
Killan Kinart each compiled three RBIs for the Tornados while Runnels led them with three hits.
Sul Ross clocked its only run in the Lobo seventh inning. Both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings as the Tornados took the 9-1 victory.
Michael Johnson pitched nine complete innings facing 33 batters in the 9-1 victory to pick up his fourth win of the season. Johnson finished with 15 strikeouts and allowed only five hits.
The Tornados and Lobos will close out their three game series Sunday with a 9-inning game beginning at noon.
