AUSTIN, Texas- After picking up a 5-2 victory in game one on Sunday afternoon Concordia fell to Hardin-Simmons University 4-0, to conclude their three game American Southwest Conference (ASC) series at Nelson Field.
Concordia falls to 15-15 overall and 5-7 in ASC action while, Hardin-Simmons improves to 16-12 overall and 7-5 in the ASC.
In game one of the doubleheader,
Michael Johnson picked up his fifth win of the season striking out 11 batters in seven innings of action. Johnson allowed five hits and two earned runs.
Concordia scored three runs in the first inning.
Micah Runnels led off the game by reaching on an error and then
Patrick Mercer and
Tom Williams followed with singles, with Williams driving home Runnels. Killen Kinart followed with a sacrifice fly and Chad Thielpape had an RBI single.
Senior
Tom Williams led the Tornados with two hits and two RBIs in the win including a solo homerun in the third.
The Tornados finalized the game scoring a solo run in the sixth off an RBI double by
Colin Lippert to give them the 5-2 victory.
Hardin-Simmons jumped out ahead of the Tornados in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the second off two RBI singles. The Cowboys added a single run in the third.
The game three starter for Hardin-Simmons, Tim Kriegel threw a three-hit shutout as he picked up the win on the road. Concordia's
Ben Whiteley allowed ten hits and four earned runs in the loss.
The Cowboys added another run in the fourth to give them the 4-0 victory.
Patrick Mercer led the Tornados with two hits.
Concordia will be back in non-conference action on Tuesday as they take on Southwestern University at the Dell Diamond. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
CONCORDIA BASEBALL NOTE: With the win over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday Concordia head coach, Mike Gardner is now tied with with former head coach Jack Faszholz as the all-time win leader with 234 career wins.
