AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas women's soccer team won its season opener Tuesday afternoon by a 3-0 decision over Huston-Tillotson at the Town & Country Optimist Soccer Fields.
Late in the first half, the Tornados (1-0-0) jumped on visiting Huston-Tillotson (0-1-0) with a pair of goals before halftime. Sophomore midfielder #Kiera Ruck# scored her ninth career goal after scoring on a left-footed strike at the 31:05 mark.
Sophomore transfer #Victoria Williams# scored her first career goal three minutes later after cleaning up a ball that bounced out of the hands of the Rams' goalkeeper in the 35th minute.
Concordia sealed the victory in the second half after junior #Lya Morfitt# one-touched a pass from #Hilary Wagner# past Huston-Tillotson goalkeeper Pamela Carias and into the back of the net, giving the Tornados a 3-0 advantage.
"I am really proud of what happened out on the field today," said Concordia head coach Corey Holton. "There's still some to work on, but it gave us a chance to see where we are right now."
Concordia dominated most of the contest posting 20 shots to the four taken by Huston-Tillotson. The Tornados also recorded four corner kicks and were whistled for 12 fouls in the contest. Huston-Tillotson was charged with seven fouls and were without a corner kick during the game.
"We got the result we were looking for today," Holton said. "We are still going forward and this is a good start."
Ruck led the team with seven total shots on the day, including two on goal. #Rose Cutrer# posted three shots in the win for Concordia.
Freshman goalkeeper #Teysha Sivage# recorded four saves in her collegiate debut for Concordia.
The Tornados look to build on the momentum from their first win when they host Paul Quinn College this weekend in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match on Sept. 5.
