AUSTIN, Texas -- Four players scored in double digits to help the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team snap a five-game losing streak with an 81-74 win over visiting Sul Ross State University on Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse. Senior forward #Kerrie Carter# led the way for the Tornados (6-9, 4-7 ASC) with a double-double performance of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
CTX held a 13-point advantage (70-57) with 6:26 remaining in the contest. Sul Ross State (1-14, 1-10 ASC) made a late charge, scoring four straight points to pull within nine (70-61). Concordia held an 11-8 scoring advantage over the next five minutes, which gave the Tornados an 81-69 lead with 1:36 left. The Lobos would finished the contest on a 5-0 run (81-74) but the charge was too late.
The Tornados led by double digits for most of the second half. CTX's largest lead of the contest was 15 points (56-41). Concordia used the strength of a 10-6 run near the end of the first half to lead by nine points at halftime (39-30).
Carter balanced her efforts over the full 40 minutes of the contest, scoring 11 of her 21 points and collecting six of her 11 rebounds in the first half of play. Freshman guard #Brianna Smith# also recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and career-best 10 rebounds. Freshman post #Skylar Lott# continued her solid performance on the court by scoring 14 points and grabbing seven boards in 13 minutes of action. Freshman guard #Margaret Milling# also scored in double digits, netting 10 points to go along with eight steals, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Tornados capped off the win with their best shooting performance since their last win on Dec. 30, 2009. CTX shot 42.2% (27-of-64) from the floor. Concordia also recorded its best rebounding effort of the season after outrebounding Sul Ross State 52-30.
Concordia will look to post back-to-back wins for the first time since early December as they travel to Schreiner University on Thursday, Jan. 21. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Kerrville.
