Tornados Outlasted by Hardin-Simmons

AUSTIN, Texas --
An outnumbered Concordia University Texas women's basketball team came up just short in an 80-72 loss to Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.

The Tornados (7-13, 5-11 ASC) led for much of the contest, but ran out of gas with seven minutes left as Hardin-Simmons (11-9, 8-8 ASC) took the lead and never looked back. 

Concordia led by seven with 11 minutes left (57-50).  However, the Cowgirls used the strength of an 11-3 over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead.  Hardin-Simmons would increase its lead to as much as 10 before claiming an eight-point victory.

Freshman guard #Brianna Smith# led six CTX players into double digits after netting 17.  Freshman post #Skylar Lott# scored 13, while #Kerrie Carter#, #Deja Thomas#, #Julia Bellquist# and #Margaret Milling# all had 10.  Lott also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.  Milling nearly missed a double-double after posting nine assists.

The Tornados were 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line in the first half, but finished the contest 7-of-15 (46.7%).  HSU was 0-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half and ended the game shooting just 2-of-13 from downtown (15.4%).

Alexis Popelar led the Cowgirls with 18 points.  Angela Newcombe turned in a double-double after scoring 12 points and pulling down a game-high 16 boards.

The Tornados will continue their current three-game homestand by hosting McMurry University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
