BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas –
Mohamed Diallo recorded the first hat trick in program history, but the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to East Texas Baptist on Thursday, Oct. 6 at St. Stephen's. The Tornados had their winning streak snapped at two matches.
Diallo scored the first two goals of the match to give Concordia a 2-0 lead. He put the Tornados on the board in the 11th minute by intercepting a clear attempt by a Tiger defender at the top of the box and firing a shot to the far right post. Later in the half, the hosts doubled their lead after a ball headed over the goalkeeper's head by an ETBU defender was collected by Diallo and shot into an open net.
Matt Ruhe, who took the initial shot, was credited with an assist on the play.
East Texas Baptist (3-8-0, ASC 3-3-0), however, came storming back late in the half to tie up the score before the break. Juan Ramirez was awarded a penalty kick that was initially saved by
Jacob Stern, but the sophomore midfielder was able to pot his own rebound before a Tornado defender could clear the ball away. The play proved to be a turning point, as the Tigers tied the score just 1:34 later when J.D. Spencer finished a through ball he received from Christian Garcia.
Concordia (4-4-1, ASC 4-2-1), which played its fourth overtime match of the season, quickly regained lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Diallo, who took a pass from
Thomas Hagen, beat goalkeeper Austin Walker to the far post to make it a 3-2 match.
But ETBU once again did not give up and managed to tie the score and force overtime. Christian Garcia rifled a shot from outside the box to the left post in the 68th minute to net the equalizer before scoring again just 1:36 into the overtime session shortly after a corner kick.
Concordia's Stern made six saves, including one on a penalty shot, on 21 chances in the losing effort. East Texas Baptist's Walker turned away two of the 13 shots he faced to earn the win.
Concordia continues its homestand at Vandegrift High School's Monroe Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts LeTourneau.
