BOX SCORE
INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH COREY HOLTON
Austin, Texas –
Maire Cox and
Lauren Guerrero each scored their first career goal in leading the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team to a convincing 4-0 victory over LeTourneau on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Vandegrift High School's Monroe Stadium. The Tornados also extended two school records, as the squad has now won five straight matches while not yielding a goal in a span of 520:40.
In a match that was started late due to lightning in the area,
Maire Cox scored her first career goal in the 13th minute when she took a pass from
Axita Patel and buried the ball into the far right post. Patel set a program standard by notching her ninth career assist on the play. Shortly after another lightning delay that stopped the match in the 15th minute,
Kendall Williams doubled the Tornado lead when she headed in a cross from
Chastity Carrillo.
Concordia (8-4, ASC 6-2), which led 2-0 at the break, added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to put the match away. The Tornados took a 3-0 advantage when a ball that came off the foot of Cox was redirected and headed into the goal by a Yellow Jacket defender in the 55th minute. Later in the frame, Guerrero sealed the final outcome when she potted the rebound following a shot taken by
Taylor Pressley that was originally saved by goalkeeper Stormie Goodwin.
Concordia's
Olivia Jablinski earned the victory by making two saves on three chances. She was relieved by
Andria Rosales, who turned away the only shot she faced in the second half. LeTourneau's (1-11-0, ASC 0-7-0) Stormie Goodwin suffered the loss despite making eight stops on 16 opportunities. Megan Perry relieved her in the 77th minute and did not face any shots.
Concordia will continue its four-game homestand when it hosts Texas-Tyler at St. Stephen's on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
Notes: Concordia, which had never won more than three matches in a row prior to this season, has now won five straight following tonight's win over LeTourneau which featured two lightning delays during warmups and at the 15-minute mark ... The team has also gone 520:40 without yielding a goal, which significantly betters the old record of 326:26 set in 2009 ... For the second time in three matches,
Axita Patel established a program standard for career assists (9) when she set up
Maire Cox's first career goal ... Concordia had three players -
Maire Cox,
Lauren Guerrero and
Taylor Pressley - notch their first career goal or assist in the match and also saw
Ashley Cervantes log in significant time on defense to help the back line extend its shutout streak ... The Tornados are also closing in on school records for overall wins and conference victories ... The team won 10 matches, including seven in ASC play, last season.
