POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH KENDALL WILLIAMS
POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH COREY HOLTON
ASC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
Abilene, Texas - Freshman
Kendall Williams scored two second-half goals that were set up by
Kiera Ruck in leading the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over East Texas Baptist in an American Southwest Conference Tournament quarterfinal match on Friday, Nov. 4 at the HSU Soccer Complex. By recording their first-ever postseason victory, the Tornados advanced to face Texas Dallas in tomorrow's semifinal round.
After a scoreless first half, Concordia (14-5) came screaming out of the gates after the break and broke through with its first goal in the 49th minute.
Kiera Ruck evaded several East Texas Baptist defenders and found an open
Kendall Williams at the top right of the box. The freshman collected the pass and fired the ball past goalkeeper Cristine Aquino.
Shortly afterwards, Concordia (14-5) doubled its lead by getting an insurance goal from Williams, who headed in a corner kick to the far post that was taken by Ruck from the left side. It was Williams' 14th goal of the season and third against the Tigers.
East Texas Baptist (11-6-1), which was held to just three shots in the second half, had two opportunities to get on the board after the second Tornado marker was scored. Goalkeeper
Olivia Jablinski, however, came up with two key saves to preserve the shutout victory.
Concordia's Jablinski made five saves on nine opportunities to earn her 14th career victory and eighth career shutout. Both marks are school records. The back line consisting of
Lauren Browning,
Elizabeth Evangelista,
Hilary Wagner, Dalaine Whtlock and
Taylor Pressley along with Jablinski also helped the Tornados notch their school-record 11th shutout victory of the season. East Texas Baptist's Aquino turned away seven of the 15 shots she faced in the losing effort.
Concordia (14-5-0) will face Texas-Dallas in a semifinal match tomorrow at 2 p.m. The teams played to a scoreless tie before the Comets advanced on penalty kicks when they met in the ASC Tournament last season.
Notes: Kendall Williams added to her school records for goals (14) and points (30) in a single season ... She scored all three goals in the Tornados' two wins over the Tigers this year ... Concordia had never beaten East Texas Baptist before this season ...
Kiera Ruck remains the program's all-time leading scorer with 47 career points on 20 goals and seven assists ...
Olivia Jablinski added to her career and single season school records by notching her 14th win and eighth shutout ... Her .861 save percentage and 0.60 goals against average this year to date are currently program standards as well ... Jablinski and the veteran back line set a school record for recording its 11th shutout, surpassing the 10 that were posted last season.
