BOX SCORE
Tyler, Texas –
Shamika Singleton poured in 26 points, which included nailing a shot from downtown late in regulation to put the game away, as the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team rallied from behind to defeat Texas-Tyler on the road, 76-65, on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Louise Herrington Patriot Center. The Tornados trailed by as many as 15 points before coming back to stay undefeated on the young season.
The game started as a back-and-forth affair with four lead changes before the first media timeout at the 14:54 mark. A three-point play the old-fashioned way by
Lashanda Luckey gave Concordia a 7-5 advantage before
Tiesha Martin made three free throws to double the Tornado lead. Melissa Thomas, who scored the first nine points for the Patriots, kept the hosts within striking distance.
Texas-Tyler (3-2, ASC 1-2), which earned a convincing win over the Tornados at the CTX Field House last season, chipped away at the deficit and was able to go ahead for the first time since the opening minutes on two free throws by She'Cara Humphrey. The sophomore scored seven straight Patriot points to fuel a 15-4 run, giving her team a double-digit lead at 34-24 with 3:01 left.
The hosts were able to extend their lead by as many as 15 points when Ally Allen canned two shots from the stripe at the 2:06 mark, but the Tornados scored the last eight points of the half and only trailed by seven at the recess.
Christen McLee sank two free throws to create the 41-34 score at recess.
Concordia (3-0, ASC 2-0) completed a stretch of scoring 10 unanswered courtesy of a good jumper by Singleton off a feed from
Margaret Milling to start the second frame. The Patriots extended their lead back up to eight at 50-42 on two free throws by Allen, but the Tornados continued to roar back and went ahead by a 53-52 score on a Singleton jumper at the 12:07 mark.
The teams exchanged baskets over the next several minutes before Milling assisted on another basket by Singleton that gave the Tornados a 58-56 advantage with 8:42 on the clock and the lead for good. Singleton put the nail in the coffin by canning her first career 3-point field goal by finishing a pass from Milling that gave the visitors a 75-65 cushion with just over a minute left. A free throw by Milling sealed the final outcome.
Singleton added eight boards and three steals to her season-high 26 points for Concordia, which is off to a perfect 3-0 start for the first time in seven years. Luckey and McLee contributed 12 and seven points, respectively, to go along with three steals off the bench. Milling, who entered the afternoon with the league's best assist-to-turnover ratio, had five helpers while committing just one turnover as the team's starting floor general.
Texas-Tyler was paced by Humphrey, Thomas and Lindsey Hausmann. Humphrey and Thomas finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Hausmann had 10 points, five assists and two steals. Afritina Anderson came just shy of a double-double with eight points and a game-high 14 boards.
