GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Marshall, Texas –
Collin Janssen went 2-for-2 in the opener and was the winning pitcher in the nightcap as the Concordia University Texas baseball team was victorious in both ends of a road doubleheader against East Texas Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Woods Field. The Tornados won the opener, 4-1, and the nightcap by a 5-4 decision to complete a three-game sweep of the Tigers.
In the second game, Concordia got on the board first when
Robert Brown doubled down the line in left to lead off the second and came home a play later on a
C.J. Riojas RBI single to center.
Bucky Bryant doubled the Tornado lead in the same frame with a sacrifice fly that plated Riojas.
After East Texas Baptist (3-6) cut the Concordia lead in half on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, the Tornados were able to add two more runs in the fifth courtesy of a single by
Brent Schaekel and a
Justin Beasley groundout to short which scored Bryant. Lance Anding, however, sparked an attempted rally by hitting an RBI double to the gap in left center to start a two-run fifth for the Tigers.
Trailing by two entering the bottom of the ninth and down to its last out, East Texas Baptist was able to cut the Tornado lead to a single run when Jake Ricketts hit an RBI single to score Amick. With the tying run at first and the gamewinner standing in the batter's box,
Bryant Hernandez, however, was able to strike out Anding to end the game.
Concordia's Janssen got his first career win and improved to 1-0 after allowing six hits in five innings of work while fanning three and not issuing a walk. He allowed three runs that were earned. Hernandez picked up the first save of the season by a Tornado pitcher for recording the last two outs of the game. East Texas Baptist's Chance Cotton suffered the loss by allowing nine hits and five runs, which were all earned, despite going eight innings deep into the ballgame. He struck out eight and did not allow any walks.
Concordia scored three runs in the first two frames of the opener to build a lead they would never relinquish. After Brown singled in the first run,
Nick Kozole clubbed a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game in the early going. Kozole also scored an insurance tally on a Schaekel single in the fourth before the Tigers plated one run in the bottom of the seventh to produce the final outcome.
Ryan Ullmann went the distance and allowed six hits and one run, which was earned, in seven innings of work for Concordia. He also punched out seven Tiger hitters and issued three walks while improving his ledger to 2-0 this season. East Texas Baptist's Pete Fitzsimmons also hurled a complete game, giving up nine hits and four runs which were all earned. He also posted six strikeouts and one walk.
After playing eight straight games away from Tornado Field, Concordia (6-4) opens up an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, March 1 when it hosts Texas-Dallas for a single contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
