Collin Janssen went 3-for-4 with one RBI as the Concordia University Texas baseball team earned a 9-5 victory over Sul Ross State in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 at Kokernot Field. The Lobos won the first game, 5-3, earlier in the day.

Concordia (13-9, ASC 5-1), which won two of three games on the road against the Lobos to remain in a tie for first place, started off strong in the second game by punching across five runs in the top of the first. Janssen hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to start the scoring before Kyle Bieschke singled in two more runs. After a failed pickoff attempt against Bieschke made it a 4-0 affair, Kristopher Pearce singled in another run to cap the scoring in the frame.

The Tornados took a 6-0 lead in the top of the third on another RBI single by Pearce before Brennyn Smith finally stopped the bleeding by pushing across the Lobos first run with a hit in the bottom half of the same frame. Pearce, however, was able to drive in another run to keep the Tornados ahead the rest of the way. After a sacrifice fly by Robert Brown in the top of the ninth created a 9-4 score before the Lobos managed to get one more in the bottom of the inning to produce the final outcome.

Pedro Maldonado picked up his first win of the season for Concordia and improved to 1-1 after striking out seven batters in 7.2 innings of work. He also allowed 10 hits and four runs. Sul Ross State's Trey Polston suffered the loss and dropped to 1-2 after getting rung up for five runs, including three earned, on six hits in 0.2 innings before Clayton Heise took over for the rest of the game.

Concordia also got on the board first in the opener, but Sul Ross State (11-9, ASC 3-3) got right back in it and took a 3-2 lead thanks to a three-run homer by Andy Silcox. The junior went yard in the bottom of the second after Brian Mata was hit by a pitch and Cameron Sellstrom singled to put two runners on the bases with only one out.

The Tornados, however, fought back and were able to tie the game at 3-all when C.J. Riojas, who led off the top of the fourth with a single, scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. But the comeback effort would fall short, as the Lobos would score once in the fourth and fifth frames, which was capped by a solo home run by Jared Mosqueda.

Janssen was tagged with his first loss of the season for Concordia and fell to 2-1 by giving up seven hits and four runs. Royce Silvera went the distance in the seven-inning game to pick up the victory for Sul Ross State. He fanned five and yielded 10 hits and three runs, including two earned, to up his overall record to 4-2.

Concordia and Hardin-Simmons, which have identical 5-1 ledgers in league play, will face each other in a pivotal three-game series at Tornado Field next weekend beginning on Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m.
