Austin, Texas – The Concordia University Texas baseball team will look to maintain its position in the top four of the American Southwest Conference West Division standings when it hosts Mary Hardin-Baylor for a three-game series on Apr. 8-9. Forever Video Productions is slated to webcast all of the action, which includes the Senior Day ceremony that will take place before Saturday's doubleheader.
Concordia (16-12, ASC 8-4), which has already surpassed last season's win total with 11 regular-season games remaining, enters tonight's action in a position to host a playoff series at the end of the month. The Tornados have particularly relied on strong pitching and defense to find success.
Colin Butschek has been the team's ace on the mound, having won all six of his decisions over the last six Friday nights. The sophomore, who has a 6-1 record and a 3.61 earned run average, has fanned 42 hitters while only issuing eight walks.
Ryan Ullmann,
Gerry Morrison and
Bryant Hernandez have all been solid in relief. Defensively, the Tornados' .964 fielding percentage ranks second in the division.
Collin Janssen and
Brent Schaekel are pacing the Tornado offense and have each been named the ASC West Division Hitter of the Week. They are hitting .356 and .350 and have driven in 17 and 15 runs, respectively.
Colton Gommert (.435, 12 RBI) and
Kyle Bieschke (.405, 14 RBI) have been the team's hottest hitters in conference play.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (14-14, ASC 5-7), which was selected to finish fourth among eight teams in the American Southwest Conference West Division Preseason Poll, enters tonight's action in a three-way tie for fifth place and just one game out of third for a playoff spot. Pacing the offense, which has seven regular starters batting over .300, is senior outfielder Ricky Brenek. He is hitting .330 with two home runs and 17 RBI. Josh Frederick leads the team in several of the power categories, including home runs (4) and RBI (26). He is also batting .318 and recently went 4-for-11 with a homer and five runs batted in last weekend against Schreiner. Chance Ryan has been the team's ace on the pitching staff. The sophomore, who has a 5.28 earned run average, is among the ASC West Division leaders in wins (5) and strikeouts (34).
