Bucky Bryant went a combined 5-for-6 with three doubles and Pedro Maldonado hurled a complete game while setting a career high for strikeouts in the nightcap to lead the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, Apr. 9 at Tornado Field. After honoring their 10-member senior class with a special ceremony, the Tornados won the opener, 7-5, and took the second game by a 9-2 decision.

Concordia (19-12, ASC 11-4), which also won Friday night's matchup over the Cru, scored the first three runs of the opener by plating one in the first and two in the third. Collin Janssen, who was the Tornados' starting pitcher, had an RBI single in the first and drove in another run in the third to help himself out.

The Tornados also scored twice in the fourth and fifth frames to take a commanding 7-2 lead over the visitors. Bryant, who was 3-for-3 in the game, started the scoring during the stretch before C.J. Riojas delivered what would later stand as the game-winning hit with a two-run single up the middle.

With their backs against the wall, the Cru made a fierce attempt to rally in the top of the seventh against relief pitcher Ryan Ullmann. Braden Embry blasted a two-run double to left, and Reinaldo Araujo followed with an RBI single to make it a 7-5 game. Bryant Hernandez, however, was able to come in and record the final out by fanning the second batter he faced to allow the Tornados to hang on for the win.

Ullmann was credited with the victory for Concordia after throwing 3.1 innings of relief and improved his record to 4-1. He surrendered four hits and four runs, including three that were earned, while striking out two. Hernandez picked up his second save in as many games and fourth overall. Mary Hardin Baylor's Cameron Graham lasted four innings and suffered the loss, dropping his ledger to 2-4. He yielded six hits and five runs, including four that were earned.

The nightcap began as a pitcher's duel between Mary Hardin-Baylor's Cameron Arnett and Concordia's Maldonado, but the Tornados were finally able to break the game open by scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth. Robert Brown put the hosts on the board with an RBI double to left before Kyle Bieschke followed with a three-run homer to left center that graced over the wall in front of the scoreboard. One inning later, a bases-clearing double by Justin Beasley extended the Tornado lead to 7-0.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (14-17, ASC 5-10) found a way to get on the scoreboard when Josh Fredrick clubbed a solo home run to left in the top of the sixth, but Concordia answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the same frame. Bryant had an RBI double and came home later on a sacrifice fly to left by McManemin. A harmless one-run single up the middle by Seth Lynn in the top of the ninth sealed the final outcome.

Maldonado picked up the win by going the distance for the first time in his career to up his record to 2-2 for Concordia. He registered a career-high 10 strikeouts and only issued one walk. In addition, the senior allowed just two runs, including one earned, and eight hits. Mary Hardin-Baylor's Arnett and fell to 3-2 after giving up nine hits and nine runs, including seven that were earned, over five innings.

Concordia will host Texas-Brownsville in its final regular-season doubleheader at Tornado Field on Tuesday, Apr. 12 beginning at 3 p.m.
