Abilene, Texas – Concordia University Texas baseball players
Robert Brown and
Brent Schaekel were named to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team. The announcement was made on Saturday, May 21 after Chapman defeated Linfield, 8-7, in the championship game to punch its ticket to the NCAA Division III College World Series.
Brown, a senior first baseman from Etna, Calif., led all players among the six teams at the regional with seven runs batted in while also hitting .333 in four games. Three of his five hits were for extra bases. Brown's best performance came in the squad's 12-6 victory in an elimination game against nationally-ranked Redlands. He went 3-for-5 with five RBI, which included blasting a three-run homer to give the Tornados an 11-2 advantage in the sixth inning and break the game open.
Schaekel ended the regional with a .444 batting average to go along with six runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. He finished tied for first in runs scored as well as tied for second in total hits (8) and thefts in the six-team field. A sophomore center fielder from Tomball, Texas, Schaekel recorded multiple hits in three of the four games. He notched two hits and stole a pair of bases in a 5-2 win over Linfield and also went 3-for-6 with four runs scored against Redlands, helping the Tornados upset a nationally-ranked opponent in each game.
Concordia (32-17) put together one of its biggest turnaround seasons in program history under the direction of second-year head coach
Tommy Boggs. After winning just 15 games in 2010 and being picked to finish sixth among eight schools in the 2011 American Southwest Conference West Division Preseason Poll, the Tornados more than doubled their win total, won a share of the West Division title for the third time in school history and captured their second ASC championship by knocking off the host school on its home field twice this spring.
Boggs' squad ended the 2011 campaign by defeating two nationally-ranked opponents, beginning with a 5-2 upset of No. 5 Linfield, at Walt Driggers Field in a span of three days before being eliminated by Chapman. Concordia's 32 victories in 2011 were the second most in the program's NCAA Division III era, only trailing the 35 wins that were recorded by the 2002 squad.
