BOX SCORE
Sherman, Texas – Freshmen
Sean Maloney and
Dustin Ratheal each scored their first career goal, but the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team fell to Austin College by a 3-2 decision on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Tornados held a one-goal advantage midway through the second half before surrendering two tallies, including the game-winner with under 10 minutes to play.
Austin College (3-1-1), which is ranked ninth in the NSCAA West Region Poll, got on the board first courtesy of an unassisted tally by Caleb Sherer in the 13th minute. Concordia, however, netted the equalizer less than 12 minutes before halftime when Maloney found the back of the net for the first time as a collegian. The teams went into recess with the score deadlocked at 1-1 and the shot count also even at 7-7.
Concordia (0-2) was able to go ahead for the first time in the 61st minute when Ratheal potted a rebound off a hard shot by
Taylor Granato, who was credited with an assist on the play. But the lead was short lived, as Chris Melton scored in the 65th minute to knot things up before adding the game-winning tally in the 81st minute of action.
Jacob Stern, who was honorably mentioned for All-American Southwest Conference accolades last season, made six saves on 19 chances in the losing effort for Concordia. Austin College's Grant Gosselin earned the victory by turning away five of the 12 shots he faced.
Concordia opens ASC play when it visits Hardin-Simmons, which is the alma mater of first-year head coach Tatenda Chieza, on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
Note: All three goals for the Tornados this season have been scored by true freshmen.
