Sherman, Texas – Freshman
Lena New scored her first two career goals less than seven minutes apart, including the game-winning tally, to lift the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team to a 3-2 come-from behind victory on the road against Austin College on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Chastity Carrillo set up both of New's scores to help lead the Tornados to their first-ever victory in five tries against the 'Roos.
Austin College (2-2), which entered the afternoon on a two-game winning streak with victories over LeTourneau and Mary Hardin-Baylor got on the board first when Lauren Scott was able to get the ball past
Olivia Jablinski after receiving a pass from Sydney Redding in the 13th minute.
Kendall Williams was able to tie it all up at 1-1 when she found the back of the net for the first time in her career, but the 'Roos answered right back at the midway point of the opening frame on another marker by Scott.
After being outshot in the first half, Concordia came out with a vengeance in the second frame and held an 8-6 edge in shot attempts and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes. The Tornados netted the equalizer in the 56th minute when New finished a corner kick attempt taken by Carrillo. Just 6:42 later, Carrillo found New again for the game-winning score that would seal the final outcome.
Concordia's
Olivia Jablinski was credited with her second straight victory by stopping five of the 13 shots she faced. Maya Warnock suffered the loss for Austin College and only made two saves on 10 chances.
“There were several big performances by our freshmen and younger players today,” said third-year head coach Corey Holton, who has led the CTX program to its two winningest seasons in program history. “The match was a back-and-forth battle, and I was especially pleased with how we were able to come back. It was a great way for us to finish our non-conference schedule.”
Concordia (2-2) opens up American Southwest Conference action when it travels to Abilene to face Hardin-Simmons, which won the NCAA Division III National Championship a year ago, on Friday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.
