Abilene, Texas – Katie Kuykendall found the back of the net in the opening minutes and assisted on two more scores in the first half in leading Hardin-Simmons to a 6-0 win over the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team on Friday, Sept. 16 at the HSU Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls, who won the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship and are currently ranked 10th in the country, extended their unbeaten streak in American Southwest Conference play to 133 matches.
Kuykendall, who was named the ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, wasted no time putting Hardin-Simmons (3-1) on the scoreboard. She netted the first goal of the match in the fourth minute and added two helpers before the midway point of the opening frame. Devon Howard headed in a cross to double the Cowgirl lead in the 10th minute before Courtney Kramer tallied a goal off a corner kick. A strike from the top of the box by Vivian Wells made it 4-0 before the break.
The hosts got two quick goals in the second half by Miranda Bersosa. Her rebound attempt following a shot taken by Taylor Thigpen made it 6-0 in the 60th minute and sealed the final outcome. The Tornados were able to get two shots on net from
Adrianne Ambrosy and
Lauren Guerrero in the second half, but both of them were stopped by Amy Powell.
Concordia's
Andria Rosales, who earned her first collegiate start, went the distance in the losing effort and made six saves on 21 chances. Hardin-Simmons' Rebecca Roth and Powell combined for the shutout. Roth made one stop in the first half, while Powell turned away two shots over the last 45 minutes of action.
Concordia (2-3, ASC 0-1), which has played two of its first five matches against top 10 nationally-ranked opponents, will face McMurry tomorrow in Abilene at 2 p.m.
