INTERVIEW WITH TATENDA CHIEZA

Abilene, Texas
- Andrew De Lira and Mohamed Diallo each found the back of the net in leading the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over McMurry on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Edwards Field. Tatenda Chieza picked up his first career head coaching victory as the Tornados finished their weekend trip to Abilene unbeaten in American Southwest Conference play.

Concordia got on the board first in the 29th minute following a corner kick when Mohammed Diallo took a deflected pass off a McMurry defender and fired a shot to the lower 90 of the net. Less than five minutes later, Parra connected with De Lira for an insurance tally which doubled the Tornado lead and gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage that they would keep the rest of the way. The defense, which was being anchored by Chase Michalak, only allowed the War Hawks to attempt one shot over the last 35 minutes.

“We have a goal that we are shooting for to be the best in the league,” Chieza stated after his squad finished the opening weekend of ASC play undefeated. “It started off slow, but things are really starting to come together. It's great to get these early points and to do it on the road. The guys are gaining confidence, and hopefully we can continue progressing. I am really proud of them.”

Concordia's Todd Edgington got the start and earned the victory between the posts by making four saves on 11 chances. He was relieved by Austin Beckett, who did not have to make a save and only faced one shot after entering the match in the 56th minute. Zack Brewer suffered the loss for McMurry (1-5-0, ASC 0-2-0) after turning away four of the 15 shots he saw.

Concordia (1-2-1, ASC 1-0-1) will look to stay unbeaten in conference play when it hosts Howard Payne on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
