BOX SCORE

Austin, Texas
Lena New netted her third goal of the season, but the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss against Howard Payne on Thursday, Sept. 22 at St. Stephen's. The Yellow Jackets found the back of the net twice before the midway point of the first half and held off a late attempted rally by the Tornados to stay undefeated in American Southwest Conference action.

Howard Payne (3-1, ASC 2-0) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard and took the lead in the fifth minute. Shortly following a corner kick, Leslie Jones took a loose ball at the top of the box and let it fly. The ball hit off the top of the crossbar and was ruled in following the bounce to put the Yellow Jackets ahead.

The visitors added insurance to their lead in the 20th minute when Jordyn Stephens came in all alone on a breakaway against Olivia Jablinski. The Tornado initially made a point-blank save, but Stephens collected her own rebound and tapped the ball into the net.

Concordia (3-4, ASC 1-2) doubled Howard Payne up in total shots attempted during the second stanza in an attempt to rally. After Elizabeth Evangelista's shot to the upper 90 of the net was punched over by goalkeeper Adrienne Walker, the Tornados were able to get on the board in the 87th minute when New headed in a feed from Kiera Ruck.

The Tornados continued to stay in control and attempted to punch in the equalizer on several occasions. Walker, however, was able to make one final save on a shot by Marcia Kaiser and a Tornado corner kick was shot into the side of the net shortly before time would expire.

Jablinski made six saves on 18 chances in the losing effort for Concordia, which held a 24-18 advantage in total shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Howard Payne's Walker stopped nine of the 24 shots she saw to pick up the victory.

Concordia (3-4, ASC 1-2) will host rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
