Austin, Texas
– Rebecca Petro netted her second goal in as many matches early in the first half to propel Southwestern to a 1-0 victory over the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team on Saturday, Sept. 3 at St. Stephen's.

Southwestern (1-0-1), which played Mary Hardin-Baylor to a 1-1 tie on Thursday, scored the only goal it would need in the eighth minute of play. Kylie O'Connor fired a shot from about 15 yards out that was turned away by Tornado goalkeeper Olivia Jablinski, but Petro was there to pot the rebound into the left corner of the net. O'Connor was credited with an assist on the play.

Concordia (0-2) outshot its opponent by a 15-11 count, including 9-4 in the second half, and had plenty of opportunities to net the equalizer. Freshman Lena New appeared to rifle a shot that could have been the equalizer with under 15 minutes left to play. The ball, however, bounced off the crossbar and was cleared away by defender Claire Matthews.

"We were obviously disappointed with the result today," said third-year head coach Corey Holton, who is already the winningest coach in program history. "We would have liked to get a win. The effort was there in the second half and we had our chances, but we couldn't find the back of the net."

Jablinski went the distance for the first time in her career for Concordia, which also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, and turned away three of the 11 shots she faced. Southwestern's Sarah Nonaka earned the shutout victory after making six saves on 15 chances.

Concordia will look to record its first victory of the 2011 season when it hosts Huston-Tillotson on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
