POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH RUSTY RAINBOLT
Austin, Texas –
Madi Hess recorded 10 points, which included 3-for-5 shooting from downtown, and a pair of assists in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a convincing 93-66 win over Sul Ross State on Thursday, Jan. 26 at the CTX Field House. With the victory, the Tornados qualified for the ASC Tournament for the second time in program history and first time since 2005.
Concordia led from wire-to-wire, but Sul Ross State was able to keep it to single digits for the opening 10 minutes. The Tornados were able to go ahead by twin figures at 21-11 thanks to a
Christen McLee layup and took their biggest lead of the half on a Hess 3-point field goal that made it 36-22. A trifecta on the other end by Tonee Montoya kept the Lobos within nine at the break.
Sul Ross State, which trailed by a 40-31 score at halftime, came as close as five points in the early stages of the second frame. A 3-pointer by Krista Ford at the 16:58 mark closed the gap to 43-38. Concordia, however, got hot and scored 16 unanswered to put the game away.
Valencia McKinney made consecutive 3-pointers during the run which ended on a
Christen McLee layup. Two free throws by
Nadine Fadelle inflated the lead up to as many as 31 with 6:21 to play, giving the Tornados all the insurance they needed.
Hess recorded her 10 points and two assists in just 12 minutes of action for Concordia, which had 15 of its 16 players score and nobody log in more than 19 minutes of playing time.
Domonique Liddell nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and eight boards to go along with four steals, while
Paige Parrish and Canada netted nine points apiece. Fadelle had a career-high five steals in eight minutes.
Sul Ross State (2-16, ASC 1-13) was led by Krista Ford's 20-point effort. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Michelle Moore and Samantha Baker netted nine each.
Concordia (14-3, ASC 12-2) will host Howard Payne with first place on the line on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. The Tornados will also be honoring their Adopt-A-Tornado program members prior to the game.
