BOX SCORE
Clarksville, Ark. –
Shamika Singleton scored 27 points and corralled nine rebounds in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 74-59 road victory over Ozarks on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Mabee Sports Complex. The Tornados ended the weekend alone in first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division standings.
The beginning of the game was played evenly and featured six lead changes and two ties until Singleton finished a pass from
Casey Wallace to break a 10-all deadlock at the 13:07 mark and spark a 12-1 Tornado run. While keeping ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year Sabrina Goddard off the board the entire half, Concordia was able to extend its lead in the half to as many as 20 points at 33-13 when
Madison Kramr sank a jumper with just four minutes left.
Lashanda Luckey converted two free throws in the waning seconds to make it 37-19 at the break.
Concordia (9-2, ASC 7-1) continued putting the pedal to the medal in the opening minutes of the second half, but Ozarks started to claw back shortly after the first media timeout. The Eagles trimmed the lead down to 10 on an Ashley Teague layup with 9:37 left and came within five on another Teague layup exactly four minutes later.
The Tornados, however, would not relinquish the lead. Singleton scored six straight points and prompted Ozarks to take a timeout when she grabbed an offensive rebound and put back her own miss to create a 62-53 score at the 3:54 mark. Ozarks did not go away quietly, as Goddard made a layup and Alison Villines put in two free throws to cut the deficit to five. But that was as close as the hosts would come.
Margaret Milling made two charity shots on the other end to put the game away.
Singleton paced Concordia by scoring her 27 points on 13-for-20 shooting from the field. Luckey and Milling scored 10 points apiece, while Milling was one of three Tornado players to accumulate three assists along with
Brianna Smith and Singleton.
Ozarks (6-6, ASC 4-5) had four players eclipse double figures in scoring, led by Villines' 13-point performance. April Young and Goddard each finished with 12 points and six boards, and Teague netted 10.
Concordia, which is receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com and WBCA national polls for the first time in program history, will visit rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
