Louisiana College Defeats Women’s Basketball in Rematch of Last Year’s ASC Championship Game

Voneshia Williams and Tyler Compton each scored 12 points, but the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team suffered an 82-58 loss to Louisiana College on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the H.O. West Fieldhouse in a rematch of last season's American Southwest Conference championship game.

The beginning of the contest was tightly contested, featuring five lead changes and one tie. Concordia (4-3, ASC 2-2) started off the first half strong and went ahead 3-0 thanks to a jumper and a free throw by Compton. The Tornado defense forced three turnovers in the early going and did not allow the Wildcats to make a field goal until Keana Frank drained a 3-pointer to make it 4-3 at the 16:58 mark.

After Williams scored a bucket to give Concordia a 7-6 lead, Louisiana College answered with a 13-4 run that was capped by a Gottlieb jumper. Madison Kramr set up Williams for another basket that made put the visitors down 19-13, but the Wildcats got hot and did not allow the Tornados to make a field goal for nearly 11 minutes. DJ Vallier ended the shooting drought by converting a jumper with 23 seconds left before Gottlieb closed the scoring in the half with a trey that gave the hosts a 40-21 halftime advantage.

Louisiana College (6-0, ASC 3-0), which has appeared in the last three NCAA Tournaments, stayed hot in the second half and built up to 29 points on four occasions. The Tornados scored the last five points of the game, which was capped by a Williams jumper, to create the 82-58 final.

Williams netted her 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and also grabbed five rebounds for Concordia. Compton also contributed an assist in addition to matching Williams' team-high scoring mark, while Domonique Liddell and Brianna Smith netted eight points apiece. Liddell also finished with seven boards and three blocks.

Gottlieb recorded 14 points, eight assists and five steals in a reserve role to pace Louisiana College. Neka Jones led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points, while Frank and Kala Chenier also ended the game in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Danisha Allison just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Concordia will regroup and visit Southwestern on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.
