POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH SHAMIKA SINGLETON
Pineville, La. – Shamika Singleton recorded a double-double of the points-rebounds variety and
Margaret Milling added four assists and five steals in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a convincing 65-46 victory over Ozarks in an American Southwest Conference Tournament quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 24 at Louisiana College's H.O. West Fieldhouse. It was the Tornados' first-ever ASC postseason win in program history.
Concordia (21-4), which is making its first ASC Tournament appearance since 2005 and second overall, started on a roll and led from wire to wire. Milling canned a 3-pointer after she stole the ball away from Sabrina Goddard to make it 10-3 and gave the Tornados an 18-5 advantage at the 12:02 mark by sinking a jumper on a fastbreak by swiping the ball from Lacey Phillips.
Ozarks (13-13) came as close as four on an April Young trifecta with 6:39 left, but the Tornados quickly went ahead by double figures again on a fastbreak bucket by
Jessie Pittman. The junior forward also made a long trey in the waning seconds of the half to give her team a commanding 38-22 lead at the break.
The Eagles never came closer than 13 points throughout the second half of action. A 3-pointer by Young trimmed the lead to 39-26 with 15:58 to play, but
Domonique Liddell immediately responded with a good jumper on the other end.
Madison Kramr gave the Tornados their largest lead of the ballgame at 25 points when her shot from downtown created a 63-38 score and gave the top seed out of the West Division all the insurance it needed.
Singleton accumulated 16 points and 10 boards to pace Concordia in the winning effort. She also added three steals. Milling scored eight points to compliment her five steals and four assists, while Pittman scored 10 points off the bench and shot 2-for-3 from long range.
Lashanda Luckey contributed eight points, four boards, three helpers and two picks.
Ozarks was led by Goddard, its senior post player, who racked up a team-leading 15 points and two blocks. Jordyn Ferrell netted 10 off the bench, while Young finished with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
Concordia will face Texas-Dallas, which defeated Howard Payne by a 56-53 score later in the day, in a semifinal game tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The Comets are the only ASC school that the Tornados have not beaten yet this season.
