Brownwood, TexasShamika Singleton recorded a double-double, but the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team fell to Howard Payne by a 79-64 decision on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Brownwood Coliseum. The Tornados ended the weekend tied for first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division with the Yellow Jackets.

Concordia (16-4, ASC 14-3) scored on its first possession thanks to a Christen McLee jumper in the paint and built up a quick 6-2 advantage before the game was two minutes old. But the lead would be short lived, as Roshonda Gayden made three of four free throw attempts to put the Yellow Jackets up 9-8 and ahead for good.

A 3-pointer by Brittani Gattis extended the host lead to double figures at 20-10 by the midway point. After Domonique Liddell converted a conventional 3-point play at the 3:58 mark, Howard Payne did not allow Concordia to hit a field goal for the rest of the half and ended the frame on a 10-0 run. Kalin Hanna's layup gave the Yellow Jackets a 41-25 lead at the recess.

Concordia came out strong at the beginning of the second half, scoring 9 of the stanza's first 11 points. A 3-pointer by McLee off a pass from Singleton cut the deficit to single digits at 43-34 with 18 minutes to play. Howard Payne, however, shook off the run and ballooned its lead up to as many as 21 points before it was all over when Kayla Scott canned a trifecta. The Tornados came no closer than 15 points after that when Lashanda Luckey's jumper produced the final outcome.

Singleton led Concordia by posting a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Luckey and Valencia McKinney contributed 10 and eight points off the bench, respectively, while McKinney added four steals.

Britani Gattis scored a team-leading 15 points in a reserve role to pace Howard Payne (18-3, ASC 14-3). Scott scored all 12 of her points from beyond the arc, while Roberson finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Scott's 12 points all came from beyond the arc.
