POST-GAME INTERVIEW WITH COLIN BUTSCHEK

Austin, Texas
– Junior Colin Butschek cruised through five innings to earn his first win of the season in leading the Concordia University Texas baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Howard Payne on Monday, March 12 at Tornado Field.  Butschek scattered six hits over those five innings, striking out three and allowing only one run.

The Tornados (17-4, ASC 3-0) got the scoring started in the first with a one-out single by Quinn Guest that the Howard Payne (5-11, 0-3) leftfielder misplayed, allowing him to reach second base.  Guest would come around to score thanks to two wild pitches by the HPU hurler.

Matt McManemin led off the second inning by being hit by a pitch, his eighth of this season.  Greg Hutton's single allowed McManemin to move up to second and a fielder's choice by Brent Schaekel advanced McManemin to third.  Guest drove McManemin in with a single through the left side.

Concordia took a 3-0 lead in the third when Collin Janssen came around to score after leading off the frame with a base hit through the middle.  In the fourth, CTX added another run thanks to a Hutton double, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly by Guest to plate the Tornado first baseman.

The Tornados would hang their first crooked number of the game on the board in the fifth with three runs on three hits.  The inning started with Janssen taking first base after being hit by a pitch and then advancing to second on Andrew Burns' single.  Colton Gommert, who had six RBI in Sunday's doubleheader, drove Janssen home with a single into right field.  After McManemin sacrificed the runners up, a wild pitch allowed Burns to cross the plate.  Gommert concluded the scoring in the fifth for Concordia by coming in on a two-out double off the bat of Kyle Bieschke.

The Yellow Jackets tallied their first run in the top of the sixth, the only run charged to Concordia starter Butschek.  Another Yellow Jacket would cross the plate in the seventh, but that would be the end of the scoring for HPU on the day.

Butschek (1-0) notched the win for Concordia, while Jonathan Morris (2-2) took the loss for Howard Payne.

The Tornados will be at home March 16-17 with a three-game set against Hardin-Simmons.  Friday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start followed by a Saturday doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
